San Quentin State Prison holds 5300 inmates which are housed on prime real estate with incredible views of San Francisco Bay. It's been discussed by some California lawmakers to urge the state to move the inmates to a new location and sell the land for development.
Originally built in 1852, the San Quentin complex contains 200 buildings and 90 homes for employees and holds the state's gas chamber and death-row inmates.
Supporters want a waterfront village with many chic shops combined with luxury condos as well as high-end single family homes which would be connected to San Francisco and other areas of the bay by a ferry.
It's been estimated the property has a value at $2 billion. Selling the land would in turn act as a stimulus for the Northern California region and would become a tremendous boon to Marin County.
