We all know that the internet is a powerful advertising tool. Newspaper ads and billboards are still the tried and true 'old guard' of marketing your business. Perhaps though, technological marketing methods have caused us to forget about what makes those methods work so well so often: word of mouth.

Even though word-of-mouth is a much less expensive form of advertising it can still be quite powerful. When a client talks about you, your services and their history with you then they will express their true feelings and emotions, for better or for worse. That alone is very powerful and telling of you and your services.

As long as you provide excellent and outstanding service then the word on the streets will be that you're reliable and easy to work with, better than the competition. This is very important in competitive markets.

However, word-of-mouth does have a shelf life. Usually clients are in their most talkative mode just after a transaction. They are still excited about their new home and they are so happy with your quality of service in making their transaction go so smoothly. Strike while the iron is hot and politely suggest that they should tell others about your services.

Another way to help promote the good word-of-mouth is by giving a closing gift. A basket with wine and cheeses for instance. However, these items have a shelf life so you may want to consider something more flexible. Maybe a coupon book which offer savings of up to 50% off of goods and services in your client's area. Said services could be dry cleaning, restaurants and a host of other exciting things. Oh, and don't forget to attach your business card to the book so your name will be seen every time they use the book!

There are other times when you've had a good sale with a client, but they just don't feel so inclined to start the word-of-mouth on their own. Thus it is up to you to ask if they would please recommend you and your services to friends and family and then the word-of-mouth advertising will continue.

No matter what route you take with your advertising whether it's via the internet, newspaper or word-of-mouth, the important thing to remember is that outstanding service will always be marketable in any form. Turn your current clients into future clients!
