These days people are beginning to look to alternative forms of transportation. Bicycles, mass transit, carpooling and even walking are all on people's lists. Walkscore.com has put out a list of the top 100 cities in the nation that are easily lived in without a car. San Francisco tops the list with New York and Boston following a few brisk steps behind.
The website uses a mathematical formula to come up with a score out of 100. A score of 70 and higher indicates an area where it is very possible to get by with out a car. The score is based on availability of grocery stores, cafes, offices, parks, theaters and more within distances easily covered by the average person.
Founders of the website would like to see their scores become part of property listings. They imagine a buyer calling a broker and asking for three bedrooms, two baths, and a walkability score over 70.
