San Francisco, heralded as one of the country's most progressive cities, offers yet another fact to add to the "think forward" list: eco-conscious restaurants. It seems "going green" is no longer limited to those establishments catering to the foodie elite, charging upwards of $25 for an entree of free-range chicken. Yes, even delis, Chinese takeouts, diners, and sandwich shops are doing their part for the environment. And this isn't happening only in San Francisco proper.

Reasonably-priced restaurants in surrounding areas such as Walnut Creek, San Anselmo, and El Sobrante are doing their part to reduce the carbon footprint, making Northern California shine once again, supporting the results of a recent study on carbon emissions that deemed California as one of the best in emissions ratings.

Although not all restaurants can offer sustainable produce and organically-raised grass-fed meats, they are doing their part behind-the scenes. Alterations such as compost receptacles, water-saving faucets, biodegradable take-out containers, greener cleaning products, and energy-efficient chandeliers are popping up at local mom-and-pop establishments in the bay area and its surrounding counties. Some restaurants owners are even bringing compost material home to nourish their organic vegetable gardens that in turn supply their restaurants, and one even invested in a carbonation machine, to eliminate purchasing from outside sources. On many levels and in many ways, Northern Californians are showing their commitment to a better environment by doing their part however they can. No wonder it's such a great place to live and continues to thrive, even in tough times!
