City officials in Malibu have gone to a lot of trouble in order to ban overnight camping it the hilly canyons above the city because of concerns about fires and other problems. However, the Malibu city council recently supported a lawsuit against the California Coastal Commission after they approved the review of an application from the Santa Monica Mountains Conservancy that would allow the camping and more.

It is believed that last year's fire in Corral Canyon was started by an illegal late-night campfire. Malibu knows more than most how dangerous and out of control a fire can get and they have prepared their own amendment to counter the Coastal Commission's amendment. The commission will soon determine which one triumphs.
