California voters opted out of Proposition 98 yesterday at the polls by voting for Proposition 99 instead. This is great news for renters in areas where the rent control and rent stabilization acts are in place, for they will remain.
Proposition 98 was a package deal. Advertised primarily as a movement against eminent domain laws, it also included the elimination of statewide rent control laws. Although Proposition 99 was also designed to protect homeowners from certain eminent domain seizures, it did not address rent control issues whatsoever, leaving those laws intact.
