The results of a recent survey conducted by the National Association of Home Builders sends a clear message that a majority of American voters say they value home ownership and oppose any government interaction that will make it more difficult to own a home.
Furthermore, the poll showed a word of caution to politicians who are currently running for office or for re-election. Homeowners say they do not want any obstacles interfering with current homeowners or for potential homeowners especially if those politicians want their votes.
Those two obstacles include:
1. Mortgage Interest Deduction - Nearly 75 percent of those surveyed said that they oppose eliminating the mortgage interest deduction or reducing it in any way and nearly 70 percent of those said they would most likely not to vote for a political candidate who even suggests that they want to end the mortgage interest deduction. This sentiment held true for both Democrat and Republican voters.
2. More Help For Homeowners and Potential Homeowners - 75 percent of those who took the National Association of Home Builders survey feel that it is "reasonable" and "appropriate" and for the US government to provide tax incentives to promote home ownership and two-thirds feel that the US government should do more to help qualified home buyers get a mortgage.
Bob Nielsen, president of the National Association of Home Builders, said in a statement, "Even in a down housing market, home ownership remains a core American value, with the vast majority of citizens who do not currently own a home saying they want to buy a home. Those running for office in November need to understand that voters will not look kindly on any candidates who seek to dismantle the nation's long-term commitment to home ownership."
